Andreescu, Irani earn Rogers Cup qualifying spots

Bianca Andreescu has earned a spot in the Rogers Cup qualifying, which begins Friday in Toronto.

Andreescu, just 15, defeated Erin Routliffe 6-1, 6-2 in her second match after beating Devin Chypha  6-1, 6-4 in the first round.

And in the final, against Sonja Molnar (a decade older), Andreescu pulled off a major comeback after being down 2-6, 2-5.

She won 11 straight games, saving a match point when Molnar served for it at 6-2, 5-3. Final score was 2-6, 7-5, 6-0.

The other qualifying spot went to Natasha Irani, who defeated Petra Januskova 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Irani, just 16, qualified and lost in the second round of the $25K tournament in Gatineau last week to Françoise Abanda.  It was only her second pro event after losing in the first round of qualifying at the $50,000 tournament in Toronto last October.

Her junior ranking is No. 864; Irani only seems to play two junior events a year – one in April, one in October. She won the all-Canadian championships in April, defeating Félix Auger-Aliassime’s older sister Malika along the way.

Here’s the pre-qualifying draw.
