Another tennis concussion as Aussie Dellacqua pulls out of Singapore

It certainly didn’t get 1-1000th the play of Genie Bouchard’s unfortunate accident, but another tennis player is feeling the effects of a concussion, and has pulled out of the WTA Tour Finals in Singapore.

Veteran Aussie Casey Dellacqua, who qualified for the Tour Finals with Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan, was a last-minute withdrawal Thursday. For good reason.

It’s hard to imagine she thought this was realistic, but you can’t blame her for wanting to try.

The amazing thing is that until now, there was absolutely no mention of this – anywhere that we could find. Beijing is a big, top-level joint event, presumably with a lot of media attending. And there hasn’t been a single peep. Not a criticism, just amazement.

Dellacqua’s last match was a tight loss in the Beijing semi-finals, 12-10 in the match tiebreak to the Chan sisters.

The Spanish team of Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro will replace them, which means Muguruza will be in both singles and doubles.

  1. Unless I missed something I don’t see the cause of Dellacqua’s concussion, so googled it to find out the following from the Sydney Morning Herald:

Australian doubles star Casey Dellacqua has been forced to withdraw from next week’s lucrative WTA Finals, still suffering the effects of an on-court fall at the China Open.

Dellacqua, who copped a knock to the back of the head in the fall earlier this month and suffered from whiplash and concussion, was due to partner with Russian Yaroslava Shvedova in the doubles tournament at the WTA Finals in Singapore.

The duo have enjoyed a stellar year, reaching the final at both the French Open and US Open and qualifying for their debut as a team at the season-ending WTA Finals.

Ranked world No.5 in doubles, Dellacqua reluctantly ruled herself out on Friday.

“After spending a night in the hospital in Beijing & having to stay there for a few extra days I was able to fly home,” she tweeted.

“Since then I have been doing my absolute best to get myself ready for the WTA finals in Singapore which I have been sooooo excited about since we qualified after US Open.

“Unfortunately I am not fully recovered & I have to withdraw.

“I am absolutely devastated & I am so sorry to my partner Slavia as i know we deserved our spot in Singapore & have been one of the best doubles teams this year.”

Dellacqua and Shvedova, will be replaced by Spaniards Suarez Navarro and Garbine Muguruza in the WTA Finals doubles tournament.

    • That was the statement that came out from her just yesterday, when she pulled out of Singapore. It’s everywhere, including in my post. But there is no new information in there at all. And there was absolutely nothing about it at the time, which was my point. Astonishing.
