The men were one and done. Let’s see what the women can do.
Aleksandra Wozniak ended up No. 1 next in from the alternates list, needing one more withdrawal to get into the main draw without having to go through qualifying.
Unfortunately, that one more player didn’t materialize – you know someone will pull out before the main draw starts. So she’s in qualifying, to play Kucova.
Heidi el Tabakh will play Elise Mertens of Belgium.
t’s a thin crew of two: Frank Dancevic, and Peter Polansky (who qualified for the qualifying on the basis of his injury protected ranking, after missing so much time early last season after shoulder surgery).
Dancevic will play No. 17 seed Bjorn Fratangelo. (Dancevic lost 7-6 (5), 6-1)
Here’s what his section of the draw looks like.
Polansky has a tough customer in Great Britain’s James Ward, who isn’t even seeded in the qualifying but who obviously has a whole lot of experience at the top level with Davis Cup. (Polansky lost 7-6 (6), 6-4)
Here’s what his draw looks like.
