Oz Day 8 – dubs, oldsters, Genie and Daniel

MELBOURNE – Less than a day after making the quarterfinals in singles, Genie Bouchard was to be back on court today – twice – in the third round of the women’s doubles and the first round of the mixed with Aussie Sam Groth. She and partner Vera Dushevina lost the doubles. And she pulled out of the mixed.

Daniel Nestor also had a doubleheader, in men’s doubles and in mixed with Kristina Mladenovic. And he was 2-for-2.

Bouchard in the Oz Open quarters, to meet Ivanovic

MELBOURNE – We’ll call it the Betty vs. Veronica Australian Open quarterfinal.

And for the second match in a row, Canadian Genie Bouchard will be on Rod Laver Arena facing an opponent who is hugely popular in this country.

Sunday night, she battled conditions, nerves and a stadium full of Aussie supporters to defeat Casey Dellacqua 6-7 (5) 6-2, 6-0 and set a date with Ana Ivanovic on Tuesday.

MELBOURNE – They might not be in Australia this week, but 16-year-old Françoise Abanda and veteran Heidi el Tabakh aren’t just sitting around.

Bouch and the Douch let loose

MELBOURNE – While you’re waiting for that 3 a.m. wakeup call for Genie Bouchard’s fourth-round match against Aussie wild card Casey Dellacqua on Rod Laver Arena, here are some shots of her, and doubles partner Vera Dushevina (formerly spelled “Douchevina” but rarely now, because of, um, obvious reasons).

They crushed their first-round opponents here, and upset the No. 11 seeds Groenefeld and Lucic in the second round.
