The Last Word: Dec. 18, 2013

The Djoker is ‘World Champion’

The International Tennis Federation has named Novak Djokovic its world champion for 2013 (along with slam-dunk choice Serena Williams on the women’s side, and the Bryans and Errani-Vinci in doubles).

Yes, it’s pretty hilarious considering the season Rafael Nadal had.

But it’s also pretty hilarious the way people are making such a big deal about it.

The ITF is pretty big about rarely acknowledging that the rest of the tennis world holds much more sway than it does as overseers and grand pubas of the Grand Slams.

As far as the Slams go – what you call an incomplete sample size – the Djoker is their winner.

According to broadcaster Nick Lester, it’s only the fifth time since the ATP Tour introduced its ranking system that the ITF’s year-end champion wasn’t the world No. 1.

So be it. It’s their award; they can give it to Sergiy Stakhovsky if they damn please.

I mean, the Spanish sportswriters voted Tommy Robredo as their player of the year. It’s their award; they can give it to Marc Lopez if they damn please.

I think everyone kind of knows what’s up there without all the outsized outrage.

The “World Series” didn’t determine the baseball champions of the whole world, either. They just called it that.

Petrova out of the Aussie Open

Petrova and momNo surprise, Russia’s Nadia Petrova has pulled out of next month’s Australian Open after the sudden, tragic death of her mother in a car accident.

Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria gets a main-draw spot in her stead.

The new and improved Margaret Court Arena

Here’s some video sent along by the Australian Open of the newly refurbished third court at the Australian Open.

The roof will remain open on it for this season, to become fully retractable for the 2015 edition of the event.

Friends fo-evah

Marion Bartoli Tweeted this pic, which reminded us of the hilarious reaction from Richard Gasquet when someone asked him if he’d ever dated Bartoli, as she claims happened when she was 16.

He categorically denied it, while saying he’d have no problem admitting it and that he had, in fact, flirted with many.

Bartoli-GasquetWhich begs the question: are they both single now? They’re quite free to date each other. She could come on the road with him. She’s got some free time.

Nadal hair update

The appalling December state of Rafael Nadal’s hair continues unabated.

In this pic (Tweeted by young practice partner Borna Coric’s agent), it appears by the look on Nadal’s face that he’s also coming to this conclusion.

Tennis player model girlfriend workout selfies

Tomas Berdych’s girlfriend Ester Satarova decided it would be a great idea today to Tweet a selfie of herself during a workout.

We’re thinking, if she intended to text this to her boyfriend and ended up Tweeting it instead, it’s probably a good thing she was fully clothed.

That would have been a major boo-boo. Wouldn’t have hurt the followers count, though.
