It was a nice Christmas present – even though the recipient doesn’t even celebrate the holiday.
Serena Williams won her third Female Athlete of the Year award, as voted by the Associated Press. She received 55 of 96 first-place votes; Brittney Griner, the first pick in this year’s WNBA draft, finished second with 14.
Serena, meanwhile, was trying to find a restaurant open on Christmas Day, since she failed to stock her fridge adequately. She also took advantage of some alone time, even though she did practice.
Tipsy tips out of Chennai
Defending champ Janko Tipsarevic announced on Twitter he’s out of Chennai next week.
Tipsarevic reportedly has a ruptured heel tendon; it made it impossible for him to play in the Davis Cup final, and you know how much that meant to him. His ranking will take a major tumble because of his inability to defend those Chennai point.
Players back to work
Many of them probably missed Christmas day completely, because of the International Date Line. But they were in their various venues practicing already, jet lag and all.
