Video: Nadal talks doping

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – On a day where most of the top players on both the men’s and women’s side did media interviews, the topic du jour, obviously, was Maria Sharapova.

When it came to Rafael Nadal’s turn at the table, he was asked mostly the same questions all the other players had been asked.

But when one media member asked him if he’d ever been tempted to go deep web – so to speak – to try to recover from his many injuries more quickly, the Mallorcan said his piece.

He wasn’t rude, he was firm. And eloquent.

Nadal has always maintained that he is and has always been a clean athlete. He said he knows things to the contrary have been said over the years and, with the news of the positive test from Maria Sharapova, the whispers began anew. The question therefore hit a bit of a sore spot; this was by far the most impassioned the former No. 1 has been on that issue.

Here’s what it sounded like. (Click on this link if you can’t see the video below)

  1. Well if he’s ever cheated do you think he would have suddenly admitted it right there and then?

  2. Very well spoken, Rafa. For someone who’s probably heard the word “doping” more than most tennis players, purely based on his physique.. he just seems very disappointed and frustrated this has happened. He truly loves the sport.
