It was always going to be a tough go for Canadian Sharon Fichman who, as the No. 1 seed in qualifying, drew out of the real up-and-comers in the women’s game, 16-year-old Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.
Let’s put it this way, as many tricks as Fichman has up her sleeve, we’re talking about a young lady who, just a few days ago, played her countrywoman and predecessor Martina Hingis in an exhibition down in Hobart.
If she could handle that pretty well, there wasn’t going to be much Fichman could throw at her.
And indeed, there was not; Fichman went down 6-3, 6-1 and the nice momentum she started putting together last week in Auckland was put on hold, at least for now.
