MELBOURNE – The highly anticipated partnership between Roger Federer and his idol, the great Stefan Edberg, officially began Monday.
The Swede, who turns 48 on Sunday (there is just NO chance that’s really true) has arrived in Melbourne and looked incredible in his perfectly-creased, freh-out-of-the pack, Oz Open ’14 model adidas duds, as he stood courtside with Federer’s main coach Severin Lüthi as their man played practice points with a tall youngster (it looked like Pierre-Hughes Herbert but we’re not 100% sure).
He spoke briefly to some assembled media afterwards.
Federer had some terrific things to say about Edberg over the weekend during his pre-tournament press conference.
“My life on tour is pretty much settled. It’s always solid routines. He’ll just fit in nicely into that. I’m just really excited that he’s taken up the offer because I didn’t think he was going to do it because he’s got a life. He doesn’t need this. … For me, clearly it’s very exciting to have him as part of the team. I’m looking forward to every week I’ll spend with him on the tour this year.
“That’s kind of what’s very exciting, just hanging out with him. That was the idea, as well. If it didn’t work out, he would say, ‘I’m not ready for this’, at least I would have had a few nice dinners with him and able to spend time with a childhood hero, which would have been plenty to fuel my motivation, inspire me for a few weeks or months, I’d say. But now that he’s going to join on the tour, you know, that’s an ongoing thing, and I’m looking forward to that.”
