IW ’15 – Photos: Serena Williams returns

Serena Williams will face Monica Niculescu Saturday in her first match at the Miami Open.

What are the odds? Niculescu was on the other side of the net when Williams made her long-awaited return to Indian Wells, after a 14-year absence.

Here’s a a look back at that fairly momentous evening in the desert.

Sitting in the stands, trying to take in the entire scene – the fan reaction, the atmosphere – Williams’s emotions on the court didn’t stand out quite as much.

Looking at these pics again, gosh, what a stress puppet she was. Just so many looks of anguish over to her camp, so many cries and fist pumps when Niculescu made an error. And the technique, well, it sort of went somewhere for a couple of hours as she just fought.

Amazing Niculescu didn’t pull out a set.
