Ahhhh, the good ol’ days of looooooove.
Venus was 28, Serena 26 when they met in the quarter-finals of the 2008 US Open.
It was the first time in a decade that they had met this early in a Slam, and they practiced two courts away from each other in the late afternoon in anticipation of that.
It might have also been the only time you saw both of them with their significant others on the practice courts.
At the time, Venus was dating golfer Hank Kuehne (she called him Henry, awwwww) later a fiancé and later than that, a former fiancé. There were some PDAs happening on the court that day.
Serena and rapper Common had a serious thing going on then, which later apparently didn’t end particularly well. He seemed quite devoted and quite besotted at the time.
(Serena, who ended up winning the tournament, beat her sister 7-6, 7-6).
