TORONTO – No handshake for you, Madam Umpire.
Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands was definitely in a dramatic mood Tuesday during her first-round match against Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic – a three-hour ordeal she ended up losing 9-7 in a third-set tiebreaker.
Early in the second set, it was hard to figure how she’d even finish. There were physical issues and multiple issues with the chair umpire (this was, it should be mentioned, not limited to this match and is a staple of the smaller events with no Hawkeye to seal the deal and less-experienced umpires calling the shots). But she hung in there.
They played the 7-6 point in the third-set tiebreak three times. The first time, there was some dispute over a line call. The second time, after a long rally, a let was called when a ball from the next court interloped. Finally, Krajicek lost.
By then, cute husband Martin Emmrich (remember his on-court proposal a few years ago?) was no longer around to watch this thing play out. Clearly they’ve settled into tennis married life. 🙂
Here’s how it ended. Sorry ma’am, no handshake.
