MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Oz Open pics: All-Swiss warmup affair

MELBOURNE – When you’ve got to run, and there are legions of faithful waiting for a little autograph or selfie time, it’s good to have a deputy.

As always, the Federer fans turned out in droves for their favourite’s warmup Wednesday at the Australian Open (he defeated young American Noah Rubin in three close sets). They were deprived of the opportunity before Federer’s first-round match against Jürgen Melzer, as Rod Laver Arena was available early enough Monday that he could have his warm-up in there.

He got a quality warmup with that other top Swiss, Stan Wawrinka, scheduled to play roughly at the same time against another American, Steve Johnson.

After the hit, though, the Fed took off. No autographs for the mass of red.

After basking a little bit in the love and pleadings of the fans happy to get his scribblings instead, Wawrinka crossed the court with a big smile on his face to oblige them.

If you can’t get one Swiss Slam champ, always good to have another.

Wawrinka also won his match in straight sets.
