MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Oz pics: Quick practice for Genie Bouchard

MELBOURNE – It was a short practice for Genie Bouchard.

For less  than an hour on a court behind the site, the 22-year-old worked out a few kinks in advance of her third-round match against American Coco Vandeweghe.

She didn’t seem particularly agitated on court. But – unusually – she didn’t stop for autographs or selfies as she was hustled back inside in a pretty big hurry. It was definitely out of the norm for Bouchard, who came off that same court two days prior and signed and smiled for quite some time.

As well, the previous day after her match warmup for the second-rounder against Shuai Peng, she did the same thing.

Hopefully there’s nothing afoot…

Bouchard and Vandeweghe have only met once before, which is a bit surprising. Bouchard won 6-3, 6-2 at Indian Wells in 2015, a tournament where the Canadian (still ranked No. 7 in the world) posted a couple of solid wins in her second tournament with then-coach Sam Sumyk, before the ab drama during a third-round loss to Lesia Tsurenko.

Asked by Open Court to compare Bouchard to another player she had played more often, Vandeweghe came up with a rather interesting response.

Here’s what she had to say.

The match will be first on Rod Laver Arena Friday at 11 a.m. (that’s 7 p.m. Thursday night in Montreal, 4 p.m. on the west coast, so everyone will be up without facing sleep deprivation).
