MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Ostapenko, 2011 “Little Ace”

French Open finalists don’t usually come out of nowhere.

When she was 13, Jelena Ostapenko won the Les Petits As tournament in Tarbes, France, the unofficial world title for the 14-and-unders.

The 1997 group is a good one, as Ostapenko pointed out in a press conference this week. It includes Ana Konjuh and Belinda Bencic (who beat Ostapenko into the top 10 but has been beset by injuries)

The player she beat in three sets in that final, Anastasiya Komardina of Russia, is currently ranked No. 176. She lost in the first round of qualifying to Heather Watson.
