Crowds sparse in Nanchang

The WTA Tour has headed to China in recent years. They feel that’s where the revenue is.

Unfortunately, there are far too many empty seats. Perhaps the events get good corporate sponsorship, but small crowds don’t spell long-term success.

This sparse crowd in Nanchang (a tournament in its fourth year) was watching two Chinese players: Peng Shuai, the country’s best over the last few years, against Zhu Lin.

On a Friday night.

In their defence, it was 93F with a humidex of 104F – at 9 p.m.
