Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the rest of her tournament commitments for 2018, thus ending her season with a fourth-round loss at the US Open to Carla Suárez Navarro.
She had not entered next week’s big tournament in Wuhan, but withdrew from Beijing, Tianjin and Moscow.
Sharapova won Tianjin and reached the third round in Beijing last year. With those ranking points falling off, she may well drop out of the top 30 from her current No. 24.
So no major damage done with the decision.
She’s expected to return for Shenzhen to start 2019.
