It’s one of those under-the-radar things that the Hong Kong Open has tripled its prize money since 2016.
The first three years the purse was $250,000, the standard amount for International-level tournaments.
Last year, it doubled, to $500,000.
This year, it’s … $750,000. Only three other International-level tournaments (two of them in China) can boast that.
The problem is that all that money isn’t buying a better field.
In 2016, the tournament had one top-10 player (Kerber). Last year, it had three (Venus, Wozniacki and wild-card Svitolina).
This year, just one – Svitolina.
