An analysis piece on the Australian ESPN site crunches the numbers about the increases in retirements and walkovers over the last 25 years.
The number at Grand Slam tournaments was 2.56 per cent in 1992. By 2017, it had jumped to 5.51 per cent.
There have been 131 over the last five years, the vast majority (74) in the first set.
The US Open leads the way in retirements and walkovers since 1992. The Australian Open is second.
The piece alludes to prize money. It doesn’t consider this context that those two Slams typically feature the most challenging weather conditions, too.
