MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Boston will host Laver Cup Sept. 25-27, 2020

They may well have given away the big secret last spring, when test graphics went up at TD Bank Garden in Boston during a Laver Cup site visit.

And in the end, even with Montreal and other cities also in the running, Boston was awarded the Laver Cup for 2020.

Next year, it will be the turn of “Team World” to host.

“Team World” might be a bit of a misnomer, as the squad has been predominantly North American. This year, with Canadians Raonic and Shapovalov, along with Americans Sock, Fritz and Isner, it was a landslide.

As well, the two host cities, so far, have been in the U.S.

Chicago hosted in 2018, and now Boston.

It’s not a bad time in this part of the world, as arenas like TD Bank (or even the Bell Centre in Montreal) are still in the NHL’s pre-season and therefore have a lot more flexibility about hosting events.

Next year’s dates will be a little later – Sept. 25-27 – as the tennis calendar turns over and everything starts about as late as it can in the cycle.

Originally, the Laver Cup had decided it would not host the event during Olympic years, which 2020 is.

Olympic years are typically overloaded as it is. But they soon decided to make it annual, every year.

The Olympic event wraps up Aug. 2.
