It’s a different world, Monte Carlo and its speeding tennis players.

And so it goes that several reportedly “top-ranked” ATP Tour players were nailed for excessive vrooming on Saturday, just outside the principality.

Nice-Matin reports that between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday in the La Trinité area, the road safety patrol EDSR06 nailed 10 drivers trying to push their very expensive cars to their limits on the A8, the main drag in that part of the world.

The speed limit on that road is 110 km/hour (68 mph). The perps were going between 160 and 180 km/hour (99-112 mph), with the record-holding bozo checking in at 120 mph.

All of them had Monaco plates. Seven had to be picked up by another driver, surrender their licenses, and pay fines of 750 Euros ($883 US, $1,185 CAD).

(UPDATE: We’re hearing that two of the ATP Tour players involved were … Daniil Medvedev and Grigor Dimitrov – both of whom will have to make alternate transportation plans for the foreseeable future).

The A8 along the southeast coast of France is a notorious place to test your engines; some ATP Tour players got nabbed for overtesting on Saturday (GoogleMaps)

EDSR commander David Roussel told Nice-Matin that it’s a steep uphill climb in that area and that heavyweight vehicles struggle to navigate it even at 50 km/hour (30 mph). So maintaining that speed requires some pretty swift work in the passing lane.

(We can make light of it, because apparently no one got hurt).

The A8 is the road that gets you from the Mouratoglou Academy in Biot back to Monte Carlo. But the players were not identified by the cops; it’s not known if any of them were competing in that event, which wraps up Sunday.

Click on the links to Nice-Matin to see the other fine vehicles whose drivers had a … rather expensive day. You have to love how the cops “car-shame” the perps.

(Notably, Roussel added that there was a gathering of some … 40 Lamborghinis Saturday on the occasion of the Bull Days Lamborghini Club event. No infractions. “They, on the other hand, were very reasonable,” he said.).
