Naomi Osaka took a bold step Wednesday night, announcing she was not going to play her semifinal against Elise Mertens in solidarity with other elite athletes who wanted to take a stand against social injustice.
In the end, the tournament paused on Thursday, allowing Osaka to play the match Friday.

In the interim, she said she spent a sleepless night on Wednesday. And she had a lot on her mind as she took the court against Mertens.
But Osaka got through. And now she will face Victoria Azarenka in Saturday’s final.
It likely will be “indoors” on Louis Armstrong Stadium, with bad weather expected in New York City.
Good for her.
