First the end of a long career, than a getting-to-known-each-other-even-better period.
And now, 33-year-old Maria Sharapova has a wedding to plan.
As the kids are doing these days, Sharapova and British businessman Alexander Gilkes, 41, did duel announcements on Instagram announcing their engagement.
They’ve been together close to three years, and have been more public than Sharapova was with previous beaux.
Auctioneer turned venture capitalist
Based in New York for many years, Gilkes was in the auctions business.
This year, he founded a company called Squared Circles which bills itself as “a venture studio, residing at the intersection of capital, brands and talent. We build, enable and accelerate businesses that help shape a better future.”
Sharapova, nicknamed “The Polymath” (they all have nicknames – a bit like the UTS) sits on the advisory board of the company.
It’s based in Los Angeles, so the relocation is complete.
Gilkes, who according to Wikipedia has appeared on Vanity Fair’s and GQ’s best-dressed lists, has been married once before.
He and fashion designer Misha Nonoo were wed in 2012, divorced in 2017. She has since remarried, to an heir to the Hess oil fortune. 🙂
Gilkes went to college with Prince Harry. So the two couples can post-pandemic socialize together as Harry-Megan also have relocated to the L.A. area.
This will be the first marriage for Sharapova, who was once engaged to pro basketball player Sasha Vujacic – about a decade ago.
In between – more notoriously for tennis fans – she had a three-year relationship with fellow pro Grigor Dimitrov.
It can’t escape notice that these three are extremely handsome men. 🙂
Sharapova recently acquired a fabulous rustic retreat in the Santa Barbara mountains.
Congrats and best wishes for a lifetime of fabulousness.
