While the group winners played their quarterfinals in Innsbruck, “best of the rest” qualifier Serbia got to go to Madrid and play theirs in Madrid.
It’s actually kind of unfair, as Innsbruck is played behind closed doors because of COVID. Meanwhile, the Serbs will be able to play in front of a big crowd in Madrid.
Them’s the breaks.
Meanwhile, Canada was the only team in its group not to get a spot in the final eight.
Kazakstan, which faces Serbia Wednesday, qualified as the winner of the pool. And Sweden is in as one of the two “best of the rest” teams. That might not have happened, had Canada won a match – or even a set – against them in their opener nearly a week ago.
(The Swedes probably won’t be giving them a cut of their increased prize money, though).
