Eventually, the action will begin in Madrid although the main draw action kicks off only at the end of the week (with the men, only on Sunday).
So it’s an extended tournament with a heavy back end.
In the meantime, there are ATP events in Munich and Estoril, where Félix Auger-Aliassime is expected to be the No. 1 seed.
Unfortunately for the women, the “mid-week” start doesn’t allow for playing opportunities elsewhere at the WTA level, other than a 125 in St-Malo, France that takes place the first week of May.

I am a little confused here… Bianca took a mental break for 7 months… so how come she is back in action with a protected ranking? Can any (vague or not) injury, no matter how nebulous be used as an excuse to take 7 months off without any consequences? It seems to me that if she wants to take a 7 month “holiday” she should be required to enter tournaments on her real ranking, which is south of 100. Of course tournaments can give her a wild card, that goes without saying if they elect to do so.
Yes, I think you are confused.
Also confused about the wild card situation. As a former Grand Slam champion, she can get as many wild cards as she wants without needed to have a tournament bestow one upon her.
So yes, lots of confusion generally.
