SAN DIEGO – It was somewhere close to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night when Bianca Andreescu learned that she would not be playing her second-round match at the San Diego Open on Wednesday evening.
She was to face the winner between teenagers Coco Gauff and Robin Montgomery.
Except a couple of rain delays scuttled that Tuesday night match in the middle of the second set.
They had to come back to finish Wednesday.
Which meant that Andreescu had an unexpected day off.
Which she used to do some training.
Here’s what it looked like.
Andreescu and Gauff, who are meeting for the first time, are the second match on after 11:30 a.m. San Diego time (2:30 p.m. EDT).
So likely around 1:30 p.m. or so.
Gauff said Wednesday and (obviously), Andreescu was an aggressive player. But that she hadn’t quite decided what her game plan would be – some of it might depend on the conditions. Which have been changeable and, this morning, a big soggy.
There was a fair bit of rain overnight, and even at 9 a.m. it was still pretty misty, although not raining.
You wouldn’t expect any delays, although Iga Swiatek and Zheng Qinwen might not get the kind of pre-match warmup they’d prefer.
The weather so far this week definitely hasn’t been … “San Diegan”.
