–
A few upsets Tuesday – Maria Sakkari got just three games in a shock defeat.
But plenty of big matches Wednesday, with Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff not even making the big court (but, in the end, Rybakina withdrew and pulled out of both that match, and her doubles match also scheduled for today).
Azarenka v Keys, Bencic v Muchova, and Swiatek took on Liudmila Samsonova. For as long as that lasted.
The loudest and brashest was Aryna Sabalenka vs Jelena Ostapenko, a night-session dandy.
(Dubai is nine hours ahead of ET, 12 hours ahead of PT; Merida is one hour behind)

Is Swiatek ever gonna lose another match let alone allow a competitor to win a game or two during a match? Given Iga’s continuing dominance over the last while, Leylah didn’t come out too bad winning only 2 games in her match with Iga.
Winning … two games is not ever coming out “not too bad”. It’s pretty bad.
But Swiatek’s opponent won’t win a single game in the quarterfinals.
Like last week (Bencic), she withdrew.
