Canadian Leylah Fernandez, who opted for the Middle East swing, will not be in Monterrey to defend the title she’s won twice.

So there will be a new champion there.

Could it be countrywoman Rebecca Marino? She had an interesting task late Monday night when she took on a homegirl, wild card Fernandez Contreras Gomez. It was mostly very good, as Marino won in two tiebreaks and will now get a rematch with Zhu Lin, who defeated her in the first round of the Australian Open.

And there also will be a new champion at a new event in Austin where Emma Raducanu, who had already arrived in town, pulled out after the qualifying had begun with a case of tonsillitis.
