ROME – The qualifying wrapped up on the women’s side – but there were also 11 first-round matches that didn’t involve qualifiers.

And that’s a good thing for the women, because Tuesday is set to be a nice day (and that’ll be the exception this week, from the forecast).

Leylah Fernandez is on late in the day, with a tough first-round assignment against the always solid Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.

Late was an understatement. With an 11 a.m. start it was 7 p.m. before she got on court, fourth in line. And it was a tough night.

Look out for the returning Kontaveit vs Alycia Parks (she killed it), the struggling Sofia Kenin against the quiet but solid Cristina Bucsa (she squeaked by), and Kaia Kanepi vs Marketa Vondrousova – which is currently a matchup between players ranked No. 70 and No. 71, but who both have been much, much higher than that.
