ROME – With five of the top six seeds out early – and No. 1 Iga Swiatek out in the quarterfinals – it was always going to be sort of a wacky final four at this rain-soaked Italian Open.
And so it is, with No. 7 seed Elena Rybakina in the driver’s seat to win her first title in Rome.
Standing in her way was an in-form Jelena Ostapenko. And we all know what she’s capable of when she’s on this kind of roll. But it wasn’t her day.
(Rome is six hours ahead of EDT).
