Iga Swiatek did her best to minimize the extra work involved by finishing off her postponed semifinal against Yanina Wickmayer in almost the minimum required.
She then took quick care of Laura Siegemund in the final to win her home-country event for the first time.
In D.C., Canadian Leylah Fernandez, who dispatched Varvara Gracheva with relative easy in her first qualifying round Saturday, did the same with Katie Boulter Sunday and will play fellow lefty Bernarda Pera in the first round of the main draw.
With the cutoff under 40 for this 500 tournament (a merger of sorts between the longstanding 500 in Stanford/San Jose and the in-and-out 250 in D.C.), it’s tough out there.
(Hamburg, Lausanne and Warsaw are all six hours ahead of EDT)
