FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – We saw the downside of dramatic upset wins on Tuesday, when Jelena Ostapenko and Sorana Cirstea couldn’t back up those wins and gave their higher-ranked quarterfinal opponents fairly routine days at the office.
Hopefully for the fans, Zheng Qinwen, the No. 23 seed, would have plenty to trouble the player who will be the new No. 1 on Monday, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka. She … really didn’t.
For No. 17 seed Madison Keys, there’s an opportunity as Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has an arm issue she attributes at least in part to the heavier balls used by the women this year.
She even pulled out of the women’s doubles – with her partner, Barbora Strycova, playing the final tournament of her career. That tells you the level of concern. And Keys took full advantage.
