An intriguing clash between 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva and 21-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez ended up an impressive win for the Canadian, who moves onto the quarterfinals.

Fernandez caught a break when No. 1 seed Victoria Azarenka retired after the second set of their first-round match Tuesday. And she ran with it.

And in doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe (whose hopes for a spot at the WTA Finals weren’t hurt by the upset loss of Zvonareva-Siegemund Wednesday), faced off against Dabrowski’s most recent former partner, Luisa Stefani, in the quarters of the Zhengzhou doubles.

They won easily, and slid into the (live) No. 9 spot in the race to Cancun.

(Zhengzhou and Hong Kong are 12 hours ahead of ET; Seoul is 13 hours ahead).
