The Canadian representation in Cancún for the WTA Finals is the on-fire team of Gaby Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe (who is as Canadian as maple syrup but represents New Zealand).
Beyond that, there are a number of Canadians at Challengers around the planet.
And the centre of Canadian tennis this week is in Edmonton, where a $25K reunites the men and the women and features nine in the women’s singles, and 12 in Men’s singles.
Pan American athletes Rebecca Marino (Midland) and Justin Boulais (Edmonton) make a quick transition to summer outdoors on clay to fall indoors on hard. Not easy.

speaking of Canadians, I thought Fernandez and Townsend were the first alternates at the WTA championships, … but now I see that Townsend is playing the tournament in Midland …
I would have thought that instead of continuing to grinding away in her busy fall, she would have taken the money and spent a “relaxing” week in Cancun
Yes, I guess you would have thought that. As usual, it’s an inaccurate take.
Steph, Have you heard any news on Francoise Abanda? Tks.
She’s out and about. But not playing tennis really.
I mean, she never really liked it that much anyway.
It’s too high a mountain for her to climb back now.
Tks. I thought she was pretty talented, but I understand that just because someone is good at something doesn’t mean that they enjoy it. A shame, though.
SHe has very smooth ball-striking ability, for sure. There were always holes in her game that she didn’t seem to be dedicated to addressing. In the end I think it just got too hard. And there was always a shoulder issue.
I’d say that most players in the top 1000 are “pretty talented”. But most of them don’t “make it”, whatever our criteria for that. And there are usually reasons. The pyramid narrows the closer you get to the top. Survival of the fittest for sure.
