MELBOURNE, Australia – The first “first Sunday” edition of the Australian Open gets under way, with a limited schedule of first-round matches from the bottom half of the women’s draw.

The top player is No. 2 seed and reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Only 16 of the 32 bottom-half and 64 total first-round matches will be played. But it’s a nice extra day of revenue for the tournament.

Leylah Fernandez is the only Canadian to be in action on either the men’s or women’s side. And she gets a teenaged qualifier in Sara Bejlek.
