Zverev faced Canadian Denis Shapovalov, into the third round on the strength of two solid wins against two very good clay-courters. He didn’t play poorly at all; Zverev was untouchable.

Alcaraz had no trouble; Rublev was pushed a bit – and it might have been a different story had he lost a long tiebreak in the first set. But he prevailed.
