–
A surprise, a loss for the tournament in the wake of a loss by Carlos Alcaraz – and another great break for Félix Auger-Aliassime in Madrid.
The Canadian advanced to the semifinals after Jannik Sinner, the No. 1 seed, withdrew Wednesday because of what he said was a worsening hip issue.
With his “home” Masters 1000 coming up next in Rome, it would make even less sense to jeopardize that if the situation was not improving.
As a result, though, the sked was pretty thin in Madrid, with two doubles matches substituting in for that first singles quarterfinal. Even more after Daniil Medvedev retired after losing the first set in the only other singles match.
(Madrid is 6 hours ahead of EDT)
