ROLAND GARROS – These updated rankings will be the ones used to populate the Roland Garros singles main draw, which will be made on Thursday.
And a few players made some late-breaking moves to try to put themselves in position.
But Iga Swiatek, who bowed out fairly early in Rome last year, picks up a ton of points in winning the title this year, and has a lead of more than 3,500 points on No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka.
Also: Cana-Kiwi Erin Routliffe is NUMBER THREE!
(There are FAR too many rankings moves to detail here. For the complete list, click here).
Elena Rybakina, who was a late withdrawal in Rome, drops her 1,000 points from winning it a year ago but still has a big lead over No. 5 Jessica Pegula.
With no rankings update last Monday because it was the mid point of Rome, there are two weeks of results going up Monday.
At No. 33, Leylah Fernandez will likely squeeze into a seeded spot in Paris, with Karolina Muchova ahead of her and out long-term with injury. Phew.
Danielle Collins (USA): No. 15 =========> No. 12 (The Rome semifinalist has been a tough one to beat in 2024. She began the year ranked No. 54).
Victoria Azarenka (BLR): No. 24 =========> No. 21 (Azarenka’s quarterfinal in Rome puts her just six points outside the top 20).
Diana Shnaider (RUS): No. 62 =========> No. 47 (Into the top 50 for the first time on a career high, Shhaider arrives in Paris will of confidence after winning the Paris WTA 125, and making the third round in Rome).
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (SVK): No. 67 =========> No. 53 (At 29, Schmiedlova is always around, and can be dangerous on the day – remember when she shocked Venus Williams in Paris? She was out early in Rome, but won the Parma 125 the second week beating Emma Navarro in the final).
Mayar Sherif (EGY): No. 80 =========> No. 66 (Sherif was struggling with injuries this time last year. So the former No. 31 is on her way back after making the third round in Rome, and the Parma final).
Moyuka Uchijima (JPN): No. 110 =========> No. 80 (The 22-year-old moves into the top 100 for the first time after winning ITFs in Madrid and Trnava. That’s great; unfortunately, she still has to play the Roland Garros qualifying this week, because it came a little too late).
Rebecca Sramkova (SVK): No. 120 =========> No. 89 (A new career high for the 27-year-old from Slovakia, who qualified and made the fourth round in Rome. She, too also is stuck playing the qualifying in Paris).
Brenda Fruhvirtova (CZE): No. 102 =========> No. 90 (The 17-year-old is back into the top 100 after qualifying and winning a round in Rome. But it’s too late for the RG qualies; she has to play them, and is scheduled back to back with older sister Linda on Monday).
Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU): No. 161 =========> No. 127 (Begu had a long injury layoff, but she made the fourth round in Rome and did herself a lot of good. She’s in the main draw of Roland Garros on her protected ranking).
Naomi Osaka (USA): No. 173 =========> No. 134 (Osaka made the fourth round in Rome, which might even have surprised herself. She’s still a long way from Slam main draw contention so after she uses up her second pass in Paris, will need a wild card to play Wimbledon or hit the qualifying – which seems unlikely).
Marina Stakusic (CAN): No. 201 =========> No. 184 (Stakusic moves into the top 200 for the first time, at a career high, after making the quarterfinals at an ITF in Prague. She’s making her Grand Slam qualifying debut on Tuesday).
Jil Teichmann (SUI): No. 230 =========> No. 199 (Crazy that Teichmann, 26, was at a career high No. 21 not so long ago. She fell off the map. And she’s working her way back on a path that includes playing $25K ITFs in Sardinia. She won one of those two weeks ago, and made the semis of a bigger ITF as well. She’s in the Roland Garros qualifying this week).
Angelique Kerber (GER): No. 331 =========> No. 238 (Kerber lopped nearly 100 spots off her ranking by making the fourth round in Rome. She’s playing Roland Garros on her protected ranking).
Veronika Kudermetova (RUS): No. 25 =========> No. 31 (Kudermetova made a big run in Rome last year, and lost her opener this year, and so she drops out of the top 30. She still should snag a seed in Paris.
Anhelina Kalinina (UKR): No. 31 =========> No. 56 (Kalinina is the biggest casualty this week, as she falls out of a seeded spot and out of the top 50 even though she made the third round in Rome. That was a good result by her 2024 standards. Her problem is that she was a finalist there a year ago, and so drops a bunch of points; she wasn’t really able to use that big bump from Rome last year to propel an even bigger run).
Diane Parry (FRA): No. 50 =========> No. 61 (Parry had just squeezed into the top 50 but she’s out, after losing in the first round in Rome and the second round in Paris. She’s trying again in Strasbourg to get back in).
Camila Osorio (COL): No. 64 =========> No. 77 (Osorio’s ranking took a hit after a second-round loss in Rome; she qualified and made the round of 16 a year ago, beating Gracheva, Martic and Garcia before losing to Beatriz Haddad Maia).
Taylor Townsend (USA): No. 59 =========> No. 75 (Near a career high two weeks ago, Townsend lost her first-round match in Rome. That drops her points from a year ago, when she qualified and made the third round in Rome. She also made the final of a WTA 125 in Florence the second week of Rome. But on Sunday, the American retired after just two games of her first-round match in Rabat. She withdrew from the doubles, as well.
Alizé Cornet (FRA): No. 99 =========> No. 107 (Cornet, who will retire after Roland Garros, had gotten herself back into the top 100 for a hot minute but drops out again after losing in the quarters at the Paris 125. A year ago, she was ranked No. 64. She gets Emma Navarro in the first round of Strasbourg).
Yanina Wickmayer (BEL): No. 91 =========> No. 120 (Wickmayer, who worked so hard to get back into the top 100 after returning from maternity leave, is out again with a chronic back issue. She drops points from winning a big ITF in Slovakia a year ago).
Paula Badosa (ESP): No. 126 =========> No. 140 (Fresh from her breakup with boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas, Badosa had some encouraging moments in making it to the fourth round in Rome. She’s still in a protected ranking, but how long can that hold her up?
