No. 1 seed Diana Shnaider, a late addition to the Russian Olympic squad, is the top seed in Budapest and, you’d think, the big favorite to take the title.

Also notable is No. 1 seed Ellen Perez – who is headed to the Olympics while her regular partner, Nicole Melichar Martinez (who is in the top 10 in the doubles rankings) was snubbed by her federation – is playing, and teaming up with Hungarian Timea Babos.

In Palermo, six singles seeds were in action including No. 1 seed and wild card Zheng Qinwen.

Zheng drew Sara Errani. Which in theory was no picnic but in the end, was a cheese sandwich.

Also: Zheng Saisai, who was ranked No 80 in singles the last time she played regularly – which was in Nov. 2021 !! – played her first WTA level main draw since then. She played three matches in 2024, in qualifying in January and February, and at an ITF in May, but has yet to post a win. Zheng is still only 30, but she missed over two years. She’s already gotten her doubles ranking back to No. 70 from … infinity in regular play this year.
