It was the last opportunity for Elena Rybakina to avoid the shutout in Riyadh, after losing to Zheng Qinwen and Jasmine Paolini.
The challenge she had was that her third match is against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Who could go 3-0 if she won it. But Rybakina took it.
Zheng and Paolini are both 1-1. And so the winner of their match likely would make the semifinals. It wasn’t close; Zheng rolled.
In doubles, Melichar-Perez and Hsieh-Mertens were both 1-1 before their final matches. Melichar-Perez got through easily to open the day. and Hsieh-Mertens went out.
