He played No. 5 seed Nuño Borges, a first meeting between the two. And he took care of him rather routinely to make the final eight.

Serb vets Laslo Djere and Dusan Lajovic, both in on wild cards, also were looking for spots in the final eight. But both were eliminated.

In Metz, No. 2 seed Casper Ruud – who qualified for the year-end finals on Tuesday despite having a relentlessly meh season, was the only one of the three players who were still in the race at the start of the week still in. Not for long.
