MELBOURNE, Australia – Now that the first round is done, it was like attrition in that there were so few matches (relatively) to choose from on Day 4.

Leylah Fernandez had a pretty good draw in that she’ll face Cristina Bucsa, a player she’s well capable of beating.

But Bucsa is slyly good; she came back from the absolute brink of defeat to upset Bianca Andreescu here a few years ago. Fernandez won, but it took awhile.

Muchova v Osaka – arguably the match of the day – is on Kia Arena. Which is down the depth chart but a lot of different masters’ needs must be met in these early days of the tournament. Muchova was incredible in the first set; but Osaka sent a message to the field in the last two.
