MELBOURNE, Australia – Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez met at the 2018 Roland Garros juniors, when Gauff was 14 (and won the thing) and Fernandez was 15.

Who would have thought it would have taken until earlier this month, at the United Cup, for them to meet again?

Gauff won that one in 2018; on Friday, they met to get into the second week of the Australian Open with Gauff a US Open champion and No. 3 seed and Fernandez a US Open finalist, and the No. 30 seed.

It was a night match on Margaret Court Arena, which means 3 a.m. ET back home. And Gauff was just too steady.
