Davis Cup player Alexis Galarneau had a nasty commute after the tough end of the tie Sunday, as he was entered both in singles and doubles (with fellow Canadian Kelsey Stevenson) at a Challenger in … Chennai, India this week. He won a round, but that was it.
Gabriel Diallo ended up one withdrawal short of being able to squeeze into the main draw in Dallas, a 500 event. Because of Davis Cup, he couldn’t play the qualifying, so he misses out on a great opportunity to make some moves.
Denis Shapovalov, who begged off Davis Cup this weekend with a back issue, won the biggest title of his career in Dallas.
Félix Auger-Aliassime tried to build on his title in Montpellier last week at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, another place he’s always played well. But he was waylaid by a toe issue.
And Leylah Fernandez was back in action at the WTA 500 in Abu Dhabi, bowing out in the QFs.
On the ITF side, Juan Carlos Aguilar won another doubles title. And Alvin Tudorica made another final in Huamantla.

I know it’s hard to cover everyone in the main and Challenger tours, but I feel Victoria Mboko should be getting more attention here. Three singles titles on the Challenger tour in 2025, without losing a set, plus a couple doubles titles. I enjoy your commentary on the radio broadcasts for the slams and hope you’ll be back on this year.
Hey John – I mean, she’s definitely making some moves.
And without the Tennis Canada structure as she has relocated (at last word) to Justine Henin’s academy in Belgium after sort of going MIA for a long period.
There’s no “Challenger Tour” for the women, though; these titles are at smaller ITF events.
She should make the qualifying cut at Roland Garros. So if I make that trip (they haven’t asked me to do radio; I guess they found someone they think is better) I definitely will catch up with her.
That said, I’m always reluctant to drop too much pub on players before they even come close to the top 200 or so. Because if they have a reasonable amount of talent, it’s not hard to get to the top 200 – especially for the women. It doesn’t mean *that much* in the big picture, and hyping it is counterproductive. I’m more of a “wait and see, show me if you’ve got what it takes” kind of person. That doesn’t mean I denigrate what it takes to GET to the top 200, merely that I don’t hand out participation medals.
