Canadian qualifier Marina Stakusic will meet home-country veteran Sorana Cirstea in the first round of the Transylvania Open.

But all eyes will be on the second court, where the country’s most accomplished player ever – Simona Halep – will finally kickstart her 2025 season. It will be in doubles, where she has a wild card with Ana Bogdan.

Halep, now 33, hasn’t played since losing in the first round of the Hong Kong Open in late October 2024. Since her last match before her doping suspension at the 2022 US Open, Halep tried to come back three times. Maybe the fourth will be the charm.

Another Canadian, Rebecca Marino, is the No. 2 seed at the WTA 125 in Mumbai, and she also is in action.
