Denis Shapovalov was among the last singles players to swing into action, with a good draw against qualifier Thiago Agustin Tirante. He barely got through, but he did get through.
And Gabriel Diallo, in as a lucky loser just like in Indian Wells, played No. 17 seed Arthur Fils in the second round – just like in Indian Wells. But he retired in the second set.
Grandstand was to be the must-watch court with Indian Wells champion Jack Draper against the even-younger rising Czech, Jakub Mensik. And Joao Fonseca, who almost had a home match with all the Brazilians in attendance for his opening around against fellow teen Learner Tien, got Ugo Humbert. Which created a few complications as the Brazilian fans who’d been there all day saving their seats suddenfly found the match moved to the stadium, late in the day.
In the end, a LOT of seeds went out in their openers, including Draper and Andrey Rublev.
