The last week before a week’s break for BJK Cup has finals in Charleston and Bogotá, and also at the WTA 125 level in Antalya, Turkey and la Bisbol d’Emporda, Spain.
Surprises abound everywhere, with the notable exception of top seed and defending champion Jessica Pegula in Charleston.
But to her credit, she was in the Miami final just last Saturday, and had to recover from a gruelling physical week there, get to Charleston, and quickly adapt to the Har-Tru surface there (a surface that’s not used anywhere else all year long on the WTA Tour).
And she wins it, coming back from 1-5 in the second set and saving three set points when it looked like Kenin was going to take it the distance. Pegula overtook Coco Gauff for the No. 3 spot in the rankings.
(Charleston is on EDT; Bogotá is an hour behind, La Bisbal is six hours ahead and Antalya is seven hours ahead).
