Few surprises as Roland Garros entry lists official

Six weeks before a Grand Slam comes the deadline for entry. And for this year’s Roland Garros tournament, that was Monday.

Since all eligible players are pretty much automatically entered, the drama doesn’t come at the beginning. Rather, it comes in those last days before the qualifying starts, when players with niggling injuries decide when it’s most advantageous to pull out.

Meanwhile, players who are at the top of the alternates list who would squeeze into the main draw without having to go through that qualifying grind are left to wait, and hope.

But for now, almost everyone is on board.

Women’s draw has four PRs

With 104 direct entries, it used to be that being in the top 100 would guarantee you a spot in the big Grand Slam shows.

But with all the players coming in and out on injury protected rankings, that’s no longer guaranteed. At times in recent years, the initial cutoff has been as high as No. 95.

For this year’s Roland Garros, No. 100 Robin Montgomery is the last officially in.

There are four players entered on protected rankings: Petra Kvitova (No. 14), Sorana Cirstea (No. 37), Jodie Burrage (No. 85) and Yanina Wickmayer (No. 91).

Wickmayer, who had been out since Madrid last year, returned in one small ITF in Luxembourg in January, and in the qualifying at Indian Wells last month and Stuttgart this past weekend.

There is absolutely no one missing from the top 100 on the entry list. Although there are certainly some question marks with players currently out with injury including Barbora Krejcikova and Marketa Vondrousova.

Next in if there are withdrawals:

Notably – Bianca Andreescu has entered Rome and Madrid with a protected ranking of No. 64. But she’s not on the entry list in Paris. We’ll check on that but it’s likely that even if her protected ranking was frozen during her recent absence, she doesn’t get to reset the clock on the limit of Grand Slam tournaments she can use it for. Andreescu entered both Roland Garros and Wimbledeon last year with that injury ranking.

Men out in full force

The cutoff for the men’s singles is the same as the women – No. 100 Mackenzie McDonald is the final one officially on the initial entry list.

The protected rankings are Reilly Opelka (No. 33), Jenson Brooksby (No. 52), Sebastian Ofner (No. 74) and Emil Ruusuvuori (No. 83).

Only Jerry Shang is already withdrawn from the event, which means No. 101 Hugo Dellien now gets straight into the draw.

Here are the alternates who would squeeze in when other players withdraw.

You can see that Nardi did himself no favours by dropping nine spots on the day of the deadline. But he likely should still squeeze in.

Conversely, veteran Pablo Carreño Busta made a move JUST in time, moving up four to No. 99. Another veteran, Dusan Lajovic, went from No 109 to No. 97 on Monday, securing his spot as did Kamil Majchrzak (No. 102 to No. 91).

Some of the current health question marks include Zhang Zhizhen and Kei Nishikori.
