The main draw began for the women in Rome on Tuesday – at least, 10 of the first-round matches that don’t involve unseeded players.

Petra Kvitova and Americans McCartney Kessler, Alycia Parks and Peyton Stearns were among those taking part. Kessler and Parks went out in a hurry.

And Maria Sakkari got a sweet spot on the picturesque Pietrangeli Court for her final round of qualifying, and mades it. It’s a better court assignment than she’ll get on Wednesday, in the main draw against another very accomplished player in Belinda Bencic. Tough luck for both.

Canadian Victoria Mboko, who upset No. 17 seed Cristina Bucsa in the first round on Monday, got through No. 9 seed Kamilla Rakhimova after a slow start, to make the main draw in Rome for the first time, on her first attempt.
