Two Canadians were looking for the fourth round in Rome – with Leylah Fernandez doing double duty in doubles as well.
Fernandez played Marta Kostyuk, who is unseeded only because the tournament used the current rankings, where she fell out of the top 32, instead of the previous list. That madee her a pretty tough third-round opponent, to say the least. And it proved too much for Fernandez, who also lost a tight one in doubles.
Andreescu got No. 11 seed Elena Rybakina, who ca be beatable or unbeatable depending on which Rybakina comes to play. This one seemed slightly compromised on movement. But her biggest problem was some vintage Andreescu, who moves onto the second week.
